I found this in the armageddon-end-times section, I believe it would be a worthy/interesting topic to also look at. Hope you don't mind Capt. ILL-Bill Would you survive?

Wouldn't you need several monstrous generators, an oil field to keep you supplied with oil, and a oil processing plant for fuel? If you can get it, can I join your colony?

If I survived I'd gather a decent sized group of people and travel along with small stolen boats to avoid any retarded events on land. I'd set up meeting places in the mountains for separations and land hideouts, and steal alot of weapons, booze, smokes, and porn. I'd use the porn for trading. I'd give my people a symbol to help raise moral.

I would gather people, people whom I trust such as surviving friends. I would seek shelter out in the country side, most likely starting with a buried hut, that expands as the colony grows. I wouldn't have it exposed for fear of looters, and the entrance would be trapped, with false entrances also around.
I would find any animals we can, and breed them for a sustainable source of food, be it cows if we're lucky, dogs, or rats.

I would set up laws. Reintroduce a currency once we loot enough from the nearby city. Kick start an economy by applying jobs, and giving money to those who work.
And, giving food direct to those unable to work such as children/elderly, or the disabled.
If they can work but refuse, they starve.

This is good because then we could hire police, fire fighters, and if we have people trained, medical professionals, as well as people to keep the food growing and cooking.

If raiders attack. We kill, and if we haven't set up the sustainable food section, we eat. (Of course, it'd not be recognisable as human... Like chicken nuggets don't look like chickens)

The colony would start out exclusive until the food stores and initial huts are set up, from there it expands.
People who go and pillage with no apparently reason will be exiled or worse.

wow what interesting forums are here-and even more interesting responses

i kinda have a question along those lines tho-sounds like a lot would do the gun thing-wait no I have the biggest baddest weapon-and hope for the best
my question is-when all this comes down, um do you not think there is a reason? i mean beyond all the crap going on in this world? and if there is, i am unclear on how ANY would survive if we go with the old ways-that's what's getting us in trouble right now.

the problem about finding a settlement is that unfortunately, in the first days, months following the catastrophe, it will be difficult if not impossible to know who people are(if some are people. even). just as there are deceivers now, so will there be then, and what better place than where people are trying to help each other? plus, as far as growing, if they want they can take your fields(they have in the past-just burned them to have people starve).

as for me, i would like to say i would just 'stay good' and help those along the way-but i probably would make for a settlement to be able to help as much as i could and take my chances using my (hopefully) increased pyschic abilities to discern the troublemakers before they can do too much damage

by the way, about the question 'would you survive?" here's really the question you need to ask yourself-hows your water? i don't know about australia, europe, etc. but if you're in north america better watch it-most water sources are contaminated, like in the southwest, the south and the east. some places in the west and northwest are still ok(i pray) and our buddy from bc is very lucky, just go outside to the nearest glacier river and he's good to go.

for one last note, here is my suggestion for 'survival' techniques-become Ayla(earth's children). really see how she lived, survived, found medicine, food, shelter, and weapons for the killing of animals if needed(much small game can be disposed of without any real big deal weapon and you probably aren;t going to have storage capacity anyway)

what ever happened - even if you survived - you would starve

just think - if humans took a battering so would all living creatures - meaning there wouldnt be many walikning around - so would plant life - and the small band of people trying to survive would just starve - so this thread seems nice - but we would all die

just think bands and bands of hungry people roaming the countryside looking for food

    this will end badly

Naa some would starve, plenty of us still remember how to live off the land. You would be surprised how resourceful we can get when it comes time to die of starvation. Some would find caches of food in supermarkets, storage areas. It would be tough, but unless it was a pretty full on, extinction level catastrophe, we would find food.
