The movie Silkwood had a very intense scene when Karen Silkwood went through that.
    Yuch is good.

A good idea stands on its own value independent of authorship.
If it stands or falls on the credibility of the author, maybe it isn't such a good idea.

bart...I remember the scene. I just found it annoying.......but it wasn't something that had me nervous at all. My exposure was quite limited.

Oh, I bet you just enjoyed the hell out of that.
Getting hit by lightning was about as close as I ever got to an experiance like that.
Although I did take a very brusing nose dive to a steel deck once, when I realized somebody had turned a radar on when they wasn't supposed to, and it was about to swing right at me.
I like eating bacon, but I don't like the idea of becoming a crispy critter myself.

Did you know that the old tube type televisions emit a bit of Beta?
The front glass is a Beta blocking blend, but some of it gets through.
The very first ones were really bad, because the acceleration voltage was not regulated.
The people who bought those very first TV's were getting x rayed in their living rooms.
The later ones have over voltage shutdown protection to turn them off if the acceleration voltage goes over specs, usually about 30,000 volts.

An interesting bit of old history.
Back in the 70's, when they first started building solid state TV's, Zenith had an expensive recall.
The vertical deflection yoke was driven by push/pull pnp/npn output transisters.
If one failed, the vertical deflection field became non linear, and bent the electron beam into the glass neck.
The Horizontal deflection would still sweep the beam, but because it didn't get very far it was still pretty intense.
The beam of Beta particles sawed a hole in the glass neck and fractured the picture tube.
Wasn't dangerous, but it cost them a shitload of money in warranty claims.
They solved it by adding a detection circuit that turned the electron guns off if the vertical waveform failed.

Probobly something you never needed or wanted to know anything about.
But my field is engineering failure analysis, so I like some of the historical stuff.

I have more, but that one is boring enough.

Oh, I left out the moral of the story.
Beta is pretty low risk at normal isotope emission velocities.
But accelerated to relativistic velocities with high voltage, electrons can burn and slice you up pretty much instantaniously.
Fortunatly, it loses intensity pretty quickly in atmosphere.

bart....its an interesting memory. Just so you know nylon attracts radon and other types of radiation.

Default Why Are the Japanese Taking Potassium Iodide ?

While the Japanese Government are talking normality ,on the other hand they are distributing Potassium Iodide Pills.
This seems to be contradictory to me ???

I was also just reading on how the west coast cannot keep up with the demand for Potassium Iodide. But the news stations say that we should only receive a minimul amount of radiotion along the west coast of the US.

one wonders if the iodide pills have a bad side effect?

sort of like that episode from "airwolf" where airwolf investigates a sovit bio-chemical plant where everybody is dead. they get exposed so the take the antidote. then they find the lone survivor. hell tells the airwolf crew he survived by 'not" taking the antidote and those that died took the antidote and died from the side effect of the cure!--

    LOL so true decades later--

Iodine is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth at recommended amounts. However, in sensitive people, iodine can cause side effects including swelling of the lips and face (angioedema), severe bleeding and bruising, fever, joint pain, lymph node enlargement, allergic reactions including hives, and death.

Large amounts or long-term use are POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Adults should avoid prolonged use of doses higher than 1100 mcg per day (the upper tolerable limit, UL) without proper medical supervision. In children, doses should not exceed 200 mcg per day for children 1 to 3 years old, 300 mcg per day for children 4 to 8 years old, 600 mcg per day for children 9 to 13 years old, and 900 mcg per day for adolescents. These are the upper tolerable limits (UL).

In both children and adults, there is concern that higher intake can increase the risk of side effects such as thyroid problems. Iodine in larger amounts can cause metallic taste, soreness of teeth and gums, burning in mouth and throat, increased saliva, throat inflammation, stomach upset, diarrhea, wasting, depression, skin problems, and many other side effects.

When iodine is used directly on the skin, it can cause skin irritation, stains, allergic reactions, and other side effects. Be careful not to bandage or tightly cover areas that have been treated with iodine to avoid iodine burn. Special Precautions & Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Iodine is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in recommended amounts. Do not take more than 1100 mcg of iodine per day if you are over 18 years old; do not take more than 900 mcg of iodine per day if you are 14 to 18 years old. Higher intake might cause thyroid problems. The topical product (2% solution) is LIKELY SAFE for use on the skin.

Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD): People with AITD may be especially sensitive to the harmful side effects of iodine.

Thyroid disorders, such as too little thyroid function (hypothyroidism), an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), or a thyroid tumor: Prolonged use or high doses of iodine might make these conditions worse.
Major Interaction Do not take this combination
    • Medications for an overactive thyroid (Antithyroid drugs) interacts with IODINE
Iodine can affect the thyroid. Taking iodine along with medications for an overactive thyroid might decrease the thyroid too much. Do not take iodine supplements if you are taking medications for an overactive thyroid.

Some of these medications include methenamine mandelate (Methimazole), methimazole (Tapazole), potassium iodide (Thyro-Block), and others.

Moderate Interaction Be cautious with this combination

    • Amiodarone (Cordarone) interacts with IODINE
Amiodarone (Cordarone) contains iodine. Taking iodine supplements along with amiodarone (Cordarone) might cause too much iodine in the blood. Too much iodine in the blood can cause side effects that affect the thyroid.
    • Lithium interacts with IODINE
Large amounts of iodine can decrease thyroid function. Lithium can increase iodine's effects on the thyroid. Taking iodine along with lithium might decrease the thyroid function too much. Do not take large amounts of iodine if you are taking lithium.
    • Medications for high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors) interacts with IODINE
Some medications for high blood pressure might decrease how quickly the body gets rid of potassium. Most iodide supplements contain potassium. Taking potassium iodide along with some medications for high blood pressure might cause too much potassium in the body. Do not take potassium iodide if you are taking medications for high blood pressure.

Some medications for high blood pressure include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), ramipril (Altace), and others.
    • Medications for high blood pressure (Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)) interacts with IODINE
Some medications for high blood pressure might decrease how quickly the body gets rid of potassium. Most iodine supplements contain potassium. Taking potassium iodide along with some medications for high blood pressure might cause too much potassium in the body. Do not take potassium iodide if you are taking medications for high blood pressure.

The ARBs include losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), irbesartan (Avapro), candesartan (Atacand), telmisartan (Micardis), and eprosartan (Teveten).
    • Water pills (Potassium-sparing diuretics) interacts with IODINE
Most iodine supplements contain potassium. Some "water pills" might also increase potassium in the body. Taking potassium iodide along with some "water pills" might cause too much potassium to be in the body. Do not take potassium iodide if you are taking "water pills" that increase potassium in the body.

Some "water-pills" that increase potassium in the body include spironolactone (Aldactone), triamterene (Dyrenium), and amiloride (Midamor).

pay attention to the words Likely and possible i don't care for how they use them.
Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

Who knows what will happen? If the reactor melts down then the west coast should be on alert, however people shouldn't panic unless they know for sure.
