Now the TSA, at Congress’s behest, is creating the Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System (CAPPS II), which will assign a "threat level" to every person who flies within the United States. The TSA has provided almost no information on how the system will operate, although the government has indicated that it could sweep up a vast amount of personal information on each traveler -- including credit history, financial and transaction records, Internet usage, and legal records (including speeding and parking tickets).

Officials of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have told Northwest Airlines security specialists that the agency is developing brain-monitoring devices in cooperation with a commercial firm, which it did not identify.
Space technology would be adapted to receive and analyze brain-wave and heartbeat patterns, then feed that data into computerized programs "to detect passengers who potentially might pose a threat," according to briefing documents obtained by The Washington Times.
NASA wants to use "noninvasive neuro-electric sensors," imbedded in gates, to collect tiny electric signals that all brains and hearts transmit. Computers would apply statistical algorithms to correlate physiologic patterns with computerized data on travel routines, criminal background and credit information from "hundreds to thousands of data sources," NASA documents say.

The concept may be part of the Bush Administration's plans for a "Total Information Awareness" system, a global electronic dragnet designed to use data mining to look for threatening patterns in everyday transactions and information - your credit card purchases, student report cards, mental health records, and more - that is reported to begin roll out in 2007.

Oh but think of the wonderful implications, Cricket! Been looking at any websites lately with the following key words 'terrorism'...'conspiracy'...'government control' etc? Watch any comments you make on this forum to anyone living outside the United States!

I genuinely worry that I shall never be allowed to enter the USA. I pose no threat to anyone but I fear I will be forbidden entry as my 'mind' does not follow the nice, clean, red white and blue, God bless America way of thinking. Hmmm thought police, that's scary.

You know Tutu for me this is the scary bit....Computers can't tell the 'motive' of an individual. I may read lots of things about terrorists, I may read lots about pornography, I may read lots about serial killers. I do these things because I am a student of social behaviour. However if you were to make a cold print out of what I read and web sites I visit then I would be immediately classed as a weirdo or a threat. So in a perverse way those who are best placed to understand and assist in preventing behaviours such as those mentioned above are the very people who are going to be viewed with suspiscion. It is sooooo sad that to be 'clean' one has to just behave in a robotic and conformist manner and not taint your reputation by investigating anything which could point a finger back at yourself. Employing copmputer systems to 'read' these things and collate information is perverse as it can never display 'motive'!!!!
