The sanctions were not 'US' sanctions...The source of the sanctions was the UN security council..."Over a million" is quite a stretch from a half million...Of course it is a shame so many people die in recent wars and wars all throughout history...Nothing will change until the fighting stops on all sides and all countries and we finally act civilized and live in peace...
Iraq Sanctions Kill Children, U.N. Reports - NYTimes.comSeveral United Nations agencies, including F.A.O. and Unicef, have expressed concern about the damage being done to Iraqis, especially children, by United Nations economic sanctions. Two years ago, F.A.O. warned that Iraq risked widespread starvation.
The Security Council responded to these concerns earlier this year when it offer Iraq the opportunity to sell $2 billion worth of oil to purchase food and medicines under United Nations supervision, the second such offer in four years. Iraq rejected both as infringements of its sovereignty and has continued to demand an unconditional end to sanctions.
The sanctions were imposed by the Security Council after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990.
Iraq claiming sanctions were infringing on their sovereignty yet they thought invading Kuwait was not infringing on Kuwait's sovereignty?...

That figure went upto the late 90's, there were sanctions in the second gulf as well, they weren't accounted for, you mention the Kuwait war and how Iraq infringed, two wrong do not make a right. But we were talking about the sanctions, not the war, but I you want to discuss the other various aspects to tha war shall I mention how the us and the Kuwaiti ambassador hired his grand daughter from a us talent agency and pose as a fake Kuwaiti nurse and stand in front of the un and testify that she saw this and that and how she was a nurse? Or how it was proclaimed by the west that saddam ha mobilised his tanks on the Kuwaiti border which turned out to be a total lie verified by Russian satellites? Both events propelled the us into the first gulf war. Both were lies!
