* I use sarcasm on-line because it's easier than driving to your house and punching you in the face.*
Using "apocolyptic" visions or predictions of disaster, is one of the most common tools used by cult groups and religions to bring attention to themselves and try recuit new members.
It works for a basic clinical reason. When you scare people, they feel vulnerable, and of course then they need someone to protect them.
To be able to control people you scare them and make them feel vulnerable and therefore in need of your protection.
It is human nature to crave protection, security, peace and comfort.
Cult and religious leaders basically fill the role of surrogate parents looking after their children.
I have always personally felt a religion, philosophy or belief system that needs to use negative thoughts to gain peoples' attention and/or devotion is manipulative and necessarily evil or unhealthy.
Interesting as you raise this line of posts you may have noted they arrested a man outside Los Vegas who was the head of a Mormon cult. This man built a huge place in Texas and has a large cult following in British Columbia. Of course he believes in polygamy. He has over 45 wives. What he does is to tell his followers who they can have as wives and husbands. When these followers come to him he splits up their previous marriages. Of course he tends to end up having wives underage, i.e., 13, 14.
They have arrested him on sexual assault charges, i.e., statutory rape. He was born in a family of 65 siblings! His father was also a Mormon polygamist.
Now of course in today's Mormon religion, they follow existing laws as to marriage, but this is an alleged break-away sect.
Like all such sects or cults, its leader maintains excessive physical control over its members. Its members have no say as to who they have their marriages with-it is imposed on them by this man and they give all their money to him.
Now you may ask. why would rational people give such control over to such a man and allow him to have sex with young children?
The same reason so many people perk up their ears when they are told the world is coming to an end and then crave someone to save them.
The same reason people need saviours to come and save them.
We forget we are still very primal creatures. We are primative creatures that
still very much join packs and subscribe to pecking orders no different then
baboons, chimpanzees, guerillas.
Its kind of scary how far we think we have evolved compared to how far we have really evolved.
One last thing. I sort of laugh at the notion that if the world blows up someone will have predicted it. At that point I don't think anyone will really care.
While I also think humans have the capacity to destroy ourselves and this planet, I also choose to believe the same thing that makes it likely for us to do that, also makes it likely we may not, i.e., find peaceful ways to evolve and become better people. So my choice is to focus on the positive potential as I find it ridiculously easy to understand the negative potential but find it more of a challenge to try pursue the positive side. Negative is easy. Kaboom.
Ah the man with 70 Wifes and over 250 Children?
I agree with nearly everything you said there Rube :applause:
