Planetary theory at least the way I understand it, within this context is: You've got a bunch of rocks, planets and other stuff all floating around in space. Then you have a large rock that gets pulled towards a planet, the rock hits and then bits are blown up into the atmosphere. Some of it is actually blown clear of the planet. Those bits then start there own interstellar journey.
In theory, and I'm not sure if I'm a proponent is that microbial life can survive the heat of impact and then get frozen onto the rock that's now on it's way toward ancient Earth. It lands, thaws and bingo. Supposedly, you have delivered a potential life form that can evolve.
I believe "they" (being geographical scientists) have found Martian rock at the north pole.
