They weren't operating inside the sandstorm, they were above it and behind it. And helicopters do operate in sandstorms. I served in Iraq and saw this quite a bit. It's not preferable or safe, but it's possible.

It looked like one of the objects flew out of the sandstorm and the other object remained stationary as the sand engulfed it...

Definitely a magic carpet...just kidding.

Looks like an out of focus plane climbing.

If you check some of the other footage shot by different news helicopters you can see other planes/helicopters looking exactly the same flying close to storm.

I'm not sure a sand storm would be as severe as an ash storm on aircraft because even in some of the news videos you see the planes landing AFTER the sandstorm has covered the airport.
